That\u2019s certainly the case with bibimbap<\/span>,\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Korea\u2019s answer to fried rice, and\u2014if you ask us\u2014one of the\u00a0top\u00a0must-try foods around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The word \u201cbibimbap\u201d means \u201cmixed rice with meat and vegetables,\u201d and variations of the dish abound.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s a dish that is endlessly customizable based on whatever the cook has on hand: s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ome versions are made with raw beef and <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/qa.cookingenie.com\/content\/glossary\/eggs\/\" title=\"Eggs\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"30317\">eggs<\/a>, while others&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">incorporate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;cooked seafood or pork and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fried egg.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What all these versions have in common is a base of rice topped with&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ingredient<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that are&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">individually prepared&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">carefully seasoned<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, then stirred together just before serving.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The result is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;a colorful dish with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flavors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and textures&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are hearty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;bold&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">harmonize<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;beautifully<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;with one another<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In its article about bibimbap, the Korean Culture&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">log cites different&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">origin&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stories&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for this famed food, which is centuries old<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cOne story is that ancestral rituals\u202fwere performed in the countryside away from home and after the rituals, instead of bringing all the foods back home which was cumbersome, the people mixed together all the foods in one big bowl and\u202fate them all.\u202fAnother story is that bibimbap came from the ancient custom of mixing leftover cooked rice with all the remaining side dishes and eating it as a midnight snack on\u202fthe eve of Lunar New Year. \u202fAnother story is that while working out in the fields, the farmers mixed together all the nutritious ingredients in one big bowl to have a quick and <a href=\"https:\/\/cookingenie.com\/\">healthy meal<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over time, regional variations developed with the most&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">famous<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;version coming from&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jeonju<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;small<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;city in South Korea.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jeonju<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;bibimbap is made with bean sprouts, gingko nut, pine nut, chestnut, spinach, lettuce, bracken, mushroom, turnip, carrot, seaweed, and beef. It beautifully represents the philosophy of&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hansik<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;(traditional Korean food), by combining the five colors that represent the elements that make up the universe\u2014green\/water, red\/fire, yellow\/wood, white\/metal and black\/earth\u2014and the five flavors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sweet, hot, sour, salty and bitter.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are also&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">variations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">based on the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;type of dish&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bibimbap is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;made and served in.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Traditional&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">yangpun<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;bibimbap<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;is served in a&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">yangpun<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a large brass bowl, although these days many Korean cooks reach for a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stainless steel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;bowl&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to make&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">yangpun<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;bibimbap<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">instead<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. One of the most beloved varieties is&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">olsot<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;bibimbap<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;is made in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dolsot<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;heavy stone&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or earthenware&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bowl that\u2019s heated to a high temperature before ingredients are added. The rice goes in&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;so it cooks&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the hot bowl and forms&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a crispy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, crackling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;bottom crust that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">add<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s a satisfying crunch when everything is stirred together.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bibimbap took flight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;outside Korea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014literally\u2014and gained&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">notice as one of the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">best foods in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;the world&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in the late twentieth century when South Korean&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">irlines began serving it for inflight meals.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Its popularity quickly&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">spread:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wikipedia calls the dish a global symbol&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that symbolizes the harmony and balance in Korean&nbsp;culture<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and CNN Travel listed it at number 40 on its 2011&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">list of the World\u2019s 50 Most Delicious Foods.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">CookinGenie\u2019s\u00a0Jared Kent makes his\u00a0bibimbap\u00a0by topping seasoned white rice with spicy ground pork and garlicky carrots, soy-glazed spinach, quick-pickled cucumbers, green onions and kimchi,\u00a0and crowning it all with\u00a0a crispy fried egg.
